Jaeger-LeCoultre

The manufacture of manufactures

Jaeger-LeCoultre is regarded as the technical backbone of Swiss watchmaking. More than 1,200 in-house calibres and supplies to the greatest houses in the industry have earned the manufacture from Le Sentier its reputation.

History

The evolution of Jaeger-LeCoultre

In 1833 Antoine LeCoultre set up a workshop in the Vallée de Joux. His invention of the Millionomètre in 1844, the first instrument capable of measuring the micron, made industrially precise watch components possible for the first time.

In 1903 collaboration began with the Paris watchmaker Edmond Jaeger, who was seeking movements for thin watches. This partnership led, in 1937, to the joint brand name Jaeger-LeCoultre.

In 1931 the Reverso was created: a reversible case developed for polo players in British India. It remains the face of the brand to this day. In 1928 came the Atmos, a clock that draws its energy from changes in temperature.

For decades Jaeger-LeCoultre supplied ébauche movements to houses such as Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin. Since 2000 the manufacture has belonged to the Richemont Group and still makes almost all components in-house in Le Sentier.

What matters with Jaeger-LeCoultre

  1. 01

Jaeger-LeCoultre trades relatively cautiously on the secondary market given its technical substance — an advantage for buyers and an argument for patience for sellers.

  2. 02

The Reverso is the brand's most liquid model. Within the line, case size, metal and movement type strongly determine price.

  3. 03

On vintage models the dial is the critical point: re-lacquered dials are common and reduce value considerably.
