From the moon to the deep sea
Few brands combine technical substance with documented history as effectively as Omega. The Speedmaster stood on the moon in 1969, the Seamaster has accompanied the brand since 1948 — and both are today cornerstones of any serious collector portfolio.
The evolution of Omega
The origins lie in 1848 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, where Louis Brandt opened a workshop for pocket watches. In 1894 his sons introduced the Omega calibre, whose success was so great that it became the company name in 1903.
In 1948, for the company's hundredth anniversary, the Seamaster appeared, derived from waterproof watches made for the British Army. In 1957 came the trio of Speedmaster, Seamaster 300 and Railmaster — three tool watches that still shape the model range today.
In 1965 NASA qualified the Speedmaster, after a series of stress tests, as the only watch approved for manned spaceflight. On 21 July 1969 Buzz Aldrin wore it on the surface of the moon. The nickname Moonwatch is thus no marketing invention but a certification.
Omega has belonged to the Swatch Group since 1983. With the co-axial escapement developed by George Daniels and the Master Chronometer certification carried out by METAS, the brand established from 2015 its own, publicly verifiable quality standard.

What matters with Omega

Omega arguably offers the best entry point into collecting historically significant watches. Documentation is excellent and the price level accessible relative to the history behind it.

For vintage Speedmasters the calibre is decisive: early references with calibre 321 are valued quite differently from later ones fitted with the 861 or 1861.
