Van Cleef & Arpels
Poetry on the wrist
Van Cleef & Arpels translates the world of haute joaillerie into moving, narrative timepieces. Between the Alhambra symbol, secret mechanisms and playful complications, the watch becomes a wearable object of the imagination.
The evolution of Van Cleef & Arpels
In 1906 Alfred Van Cleef and Charles Arpels opened their first joint shop on the Place Vendôme in Paris. The combination of craft precision and narrative design became the foundation of the house.
In 1968 Van Cleef & Arpels introduced the Alhambra motif: a four-leaf clover with a beaded contour, which has since served as both a lucky symbol and the maison's visual signature.
The house's watchmaking does not stop at conventional time display. Secret compartments, hidden dials and animated automatons connect time with nature, travel and poetry — most memorably in the Poetic Complications collection.
Van Cleef & Arpels has belonged to the Richemont Group since 1999. Its haute horlogerie components are made in Switzerland, while design and jewellery tradition remain closely tied to the Paris house.

What matters with Van Cleef & Arpels
- 01
Alhambra watches are sought internationally for their clear recognisability and their link to the jewellery collection.
- 02
For Perlée and Serpenti variants, precious metal, diamond setting and bracelet construction determine value more strongly than a classic movement assessment.
- 03
Poetic Complications models should always come with complete documentation and a traceable service history; originality and mechanical function are central.
