Richard Mille is the youngest name in the circle of great brands — and the most radical. Materials drawn from Formula 1 and aerospace, tonneau-shaped cases and extremely limited runs have created an entirely new collector category in little more than two decades.
The evolution of Richard Mille
Richard Mille founded his brand in 2001, after stints at Finhor and Mauboussin. The first watch, the RM 001 Tourbillon, broke with every convention: a three-part tonneau case, a skeletonised movement and a price that unsettled the industry.
The principle behind it is consistent: materials are chosen for function, not tradition. Carbon TPT, Quartz TPT, Grade 5 titanium, ceramic and sapphire are used because they are lighter or harder — not because they look precious.
The brand works closely with elite athletes. From 2010 Rafael Nadal wore an RM 027 during tournament play — under 20 grams including the strap. These real-world stress tests are part of product development, not merely of communication.
Production runs to a few thousand watches a year. Combined with tightly controlled distribution, this has created a secondary market where many references trade well above list price.
