Tudor

Tool watches with a signature of their own

Tudor was created as the more rugged sister brand of Rolex and is today an independent manufacture in its own right. It combines historic tool-watch forms with modern chronometer movements.

History

The evolution of Tudor

The name Tudor was registered in 1926, and in 1946 Hans Wilsdorf founded Montres Tudor S.A. The aim was a watch with a Rolex case and bracelet but a bought-in movement — reliable and more affordable.

From 1954 Tudor built the Submariner, a diver's watch used by several national navies, including the French Marine Nationale. From this period come the Snowflake hands of the 1970s.

In 1970 the Oysterdate chronograph, later known as the Monte Carlo, appeared. During the 1990s the brand withdrew from key markets.

Tudor returned in 2012 with the Black Bay and repositioned itself. Since 2015 the house has built its own manufacture calibres, COSC-certified and offering 70 hours of power reserve.

What matters with Tudor

  1. 01

Vintage models with military provenance, particularly Marine Nationale Submariners, achieve multiples of comparable civilian references.

  2. 02

Modern Black Bay references are highly liquid; limited colour variants and early series stand out in price.

  3. 03

For vintage Tudor, dial originality is the decisive value factor; service dials are common.
