Radiomir

The original form of 1936

The Radiomir is Panerai's point of origin: a cushion-shaped case with wire lugs, developed in 1936 for the frogmen of the Italian navy.

History

The evolution of the Radiomir

In 1916 Panerai patented the radium-based luminous compound Radiomir. The first prototypes, with a 47 mm case and movements from Rolex, followed in 1936.

Distinctive were the wire lugs machined directly from the case and the sandwich dial with punched-out numerals.

After 1949 radium was replaced by the less radioactive Luminor compound; the case shape survived as its own line.

From 1993 the Radiomir returned to the civilian collection, later joined by California dials, 1940-style cases with solid lugs, and gold executions.

Collector's perspective

What to look for when buying

  1. 01

California dials are especially sought after by collectors and trade above standard executions.

  2. 02

Wire lugs are a known weak point; distortion or repair traces must be checked carefully.

  3. 03

Historic pre-war pieces are extremely rare and tradeable only with unbroken provenance.
